US legal metrology: device register and inspections

A weights and measures inspector shows up unannounced, tests a scale and leaves an approval or rejection tag: that is the reality for any business holding a measuring device in the United States. And that reality changes from one State to another, because there is no federal inspection frequency. This application keeps the fleet, the inspections and the tests of these devices, State by State.

Who the application is for

For businesses and operators in the United States holding commercial devices subject to weights and measures law — scales, fuel dispensers, taximeters — whose inspection frequency and competent authority are set by the law of each State, never by a federal rule.

What the application does

  • Keeps the register of commercial devices by State, with an inspection periodicity already sourced for a few jurisdictions, and left blank for the others until it has been filled in.
  • Records each inspection with its result, the number of the mark applied and the action taken on site in case of rejection.
  • Distinguishes, for a test, the acceptance tolerance from the maintenance tolerance according to the declared circumstance, within a thirty-day window.
  • Checks the net content of a lot against a sampling plan and a maximum allowable variation, for the tables that have been entered.
  • Reconciles an NTEP certificate with a device, and answers "undetermined" rather than guessing when information is missing.
  • Prepares a quarterly verification plan and alerts ahead of each inspection deadline, once the fleet has been entered.

Day to day

  1. Open your State's record and check its periodicity and reference if already provided, or enter it from your State's law.
  2. Declare each device with its category, its accuracy class and its capacity.
  3. Record each inspection with its result and the number of the mark applied.
  4. For a detailed test, declare the circumstance: the applicable tolerance follows from it, then enter the readings.
  5. Generate the quarter's verification plan and let the alert warn you ahead of each deadline.

What the application does not do

  • It does not provide any periodicity beyond the few States already sourced: the others remain to be entered from your State's law, with no deadline calculated before that.
  • It does not provide any tolerance or net content table beyond those already entered: the others are entered with their own source.
  • It does not carry out or simulate any inspection or test: it is the inspector or service agent who works on the device.
  • It never concludes that a device must be withdrawn from service, that a lot must be pulled from sale, or that a standard must be downgraded.
  • It does not replace the advice of your State's weights and measures authority: the rules differ from one State to another, and they do change.

Free and full editions

The free edition already keeps the device register by State, the periodicities already sourced, inspections with their mark applied and a printable report. The full edition installs on top without losing anything, and adds test tolerances, standards and their traceability, net content control, NTEP certificate reconciliation, the verification plan and the deadline alert.

Getting started

First check your State's periodicity, or enter it with its exact reference if not already provided, then declare each device with its category and accuracy class before scheduling your first inspections.
