A barcode with a wrong final digit often gets saved with nothing to flag it, and the problem only shows up at the till, once labels are already printed and stuck on. This application checks the code the moment it is entered, before it ends up on a product.
Who the application is for
For shops and businesses that manage their own product references, generate their barcodes and print their labels, and want to avoid a wrong or already-used code slipping into the catalogue.
What the application does
- Checks the check digit of EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A codes when they are saved, and rejects a code whose digit does not add up, showing the corrected code.
- Keeps a reserved number range: the counter moves forward on its own and never reassigns a number already carried by a product, even an archived one.
- Assigns barcodes in bulk, on variants as well as on templates.
- Prints labels on templates matching the exact measurements of the box — several sheets and thermal rolls are provided — rather than on a fixed format.
- Offers an assistant that checks a code you have in front of you: its type, its check digit, the organisation that issued the prefix, and the product already carrying it, if any.
- Lets through, without judging them, internal alphanumeric codes and codes of a non-standard length, which have nothing to check.
Day to day
- Declare your number range: the prefix you have received and the range of numbers to use.
- From the product list, select the lines to process and assign the barcodes in bulk.
- If a code is entered by hand and its check digit does not add up, correct it with the code suggested in the message.
- Before importing a list of supplier codes, check them one by one with the verification assistant.
- Print the labels on the template matching your sheets, resuming an already-started sheet if needed.
What the application does not do
- It is not a graphic label editor: a sheet is described by its measurements, you do not drag blocks around with a mouse.
- It does not handle GS1-128 codes with application identifiers (batch, expiry date), nor regulatory DataMatrix codes.
- It does not redo the uniqueness check between products, already handled by your own system: it adds the check-digit control before assignment.
Getting started
Get the prefix issued to you by your coding organisation, or choose a range reserved for internal use if you do not have one, and measure your label sheets to create or choose the right template. Keep a blank sheet handy for a test print before opening a new box.
