Legal metrology: checking instruments in France

A butcher's scale nobody can confirm still carries a valid stamp, a fuel dispenser checked last year with no record kept, an inspector sealing it without warning: legal metrology leaves no room for approximation. In some shops, the absence of an up-to-date verification stops the sale on the spot, on the very day of the inspection. This application keeps the logbook of each regulated instrument in France and tells you, at any time, whether it can stay in service.

Who the application is for

For shops and operators holding, in France, regulated measuring instruments — commercial scales, fuel dispensers, taximeters, automatic weighing instruments — subject to periodic verification by an approved body.

What the application does

  • Classifies each instrument into its regulatory category and derives the applicable verification periodicity.
  • Distinguishes, for scales, the lighter or standard periodicity according to the maximum capacity and direct retail use.
  • Keeps the metrology logbook of each instrument: initial verification, periodic verifications, body, operator and mark applied.
  • Flags a verification as overdue as soon as the deadline has passed, or if the instrument has never been verified.
  • Seals an instrument as soon as its verification is overdue, and prevents it from being declared in service while it remains sealed.
  • Refuses to record a verification declared compliant without the number of its mark, and refuses to lift the seal without a compliant verification carried out after the missed deadline.

Day to day

  1. Declare the instrument with its regulatory category and, for a scale, its maximum capacity and its direct retail use.
  2. Record each periodic verification with the approved body, the operator and the number of the mark applied.
  3. Check the instrument's metrology logbook during an inspection, and the banner that flags an overdue verification.
  4. If the instrument is sealed, call in the approved body, record the compliant verification, then lift the seal.

What the application does not do

  • It only delivers periodicities as default values: to be checked against the order applicable to your instrument category before you set them.
  • It does not carry out or simulate any verification operation: it is the approved body that works on the instrument.
  • It does not replace the approved body's report: it files it and calculates the next deadline.
  • It does not replace the advice of the approved body or of French legal metrology on your instrument category: the orders setting the periodicities can change.

Getting started

First check the default periodicities of each category against the order that governs it, set them once for your whole fleet, then declare each instrument with its actual capacity and use. Finally, check that each body carrying out a verification holds its approval and its validity dates, otherwise a dated verification would be refused.
