An artist who is both a musician and a painter often no longer knows how many prints of an engraving remain in their possession, who held a given painting before them, or which collection society to declare a given work to. This application brings together works, their editions, their provenance and collection society affiliations, for an artist who carries out several activities in France.
Who the application is for
For the artist based in France who carries out several activities — musician, painter, printmaker, sculptor, photographer — and needs to track their works and copies, their affiliations with French collection societies and the resale royalty due on certain resales.
What the application does
- Distinguishes the work itself from each physical copy, and counts how many copies are registered, still held or sold.
- Keeps the chain of successive holders of a piece, dated, with each one's mode of acquisition.
- Keeps affiliations with collection societies according to discipline, and refuses to declare a musical work to a visual arts society or the reverse.
- Calculates the resale royalty due on the resale of a graphic or plastic work by an art market professional, at the rate you have set, and explicitly refuses it on a musical work.
- Links the movements of works or instruments to an exhibition or a concert, and closes them together in one action.
Day to day
- Create the work with its title, year, discipline and, for an edition, the planned number of copies.
- Record each physical copy linked to the work, with its number within the edition.
- Add each successive holder to the piece's provenance, with their date and mode of acquisition.
- Declare your affiliations with collection societies by discipline, then link each declared work.
- When a resale triggers the resale royalty, record it: the amount due is calculated, and you tick it off once claimed.
What the application does not do
- It keeps no accounting depreciation and no accounting entry: it tracks the artistic estate and its declared value, not a set of accounts.
- It has no interface with the French collection societies: declarations are recorded here, their actual submission still has to be done on their portals.
- It does not estimate any artwork's value automatically: each valuation remains entered by a person, with its source.
- It offers neither a marketplace nor an online sales showcase.
- It does not replace the advice of your collection society or of a qualified adviser in France on resale royalty or copyright: the rules do change.
Getting started
Create each work before attaching its copies to it, declare your affiliations with collection societies by discipline, and set the resale royalty rate to what has been confirmed to you before recording a first resale.
