WooCommerce import: bringing your catalogue across

Bringing a WooCommerce store across always raises the same practical question: how to pull in products, their variations and orders without retyping everything. This application reads the site's catalogue and brings it into yours, with a report of what was rejected.

Who the application is for

For merchants who run or have run a WooCommerce store on a WordPress site and want to bring in their catalogue, and, if they wish, their customers and orders, whether or not they have a REST key.

What the application does

  • Reads, without asking anything of the site, the public interface that feeds the store's cart: published products, variations and categories.
  • Also brings in, with a REST key and secret created on the site, customers and orders.
  • Reads the number of decimals specific to each response before interpreting a price, to never import a catalogue at the wrong price.
  • Requests each variation separately to obtain its price and reference, which are not on the parent product.
  • Never creates a duplicate if the import is rerun, and resumes where it left off.

Day to day

  1. Enter the site's address; add a REST key and secret only if you also want customers and orders.
  2. Check access before launching anything, to avoid a migration of several thousand products failing on the first page.
  3. Run a trial first, which changes nothing, and read the report to see what would be brought in and what would be rejected.
  4. Switch off trial mode and run the real import, accepting that the variations step takes longer than the products step.
  5. If the site answers with an error page instead of the catalogue, check the site's address settings first: this is the most common cause, even before the key.

What the application does not do

  • This is not a continuous sync, and it does not replace your sales system: it is a tooled catalogue import, run when you decide to.
  • Without a REST key, it does not bring in customers or orders.
  • It writes nothing back to WooCommerce and never modifies the source site.
  • Anything beyond bringing in the catalogue, customers and orders stays a case-by-case study.

Getting started

Start without a key for a first trial on your store's public interface, then generate a read-only REST key and secret as soon as you also want customers and orders. Then check your prices in the trial report: the application reads the number of decimals in each response before interpreting them, so that nothing is imported at the wrong price.
