Shopify import: bringing your catalogue across

Leaving Shopify starts with bringing your catalogue across without retyping everything by hand. This application reads the products, variants and images of a Shopify store and brings them into your catalogue, with a report of what was rejected and why.

Who the application is for

For merchants who run or have run a Shopify store and want to bring in their catalogue, and, if they wish, their customers and orders, whether or not they have an application token.

What the application does

  • Reads, without asking anything of Shopify, the store's public storefront: published products, variants, images and collections.
  • Also brings in, with an application token created in the store, customers and orders.
  • Stops cleanly beyond the public storefront's product limit, rather than letting it look like a failure.
  • Normalises product identifiers, whether they come from the storefront or the token-based interface, to avoid any duplicate if you switch paths.
  • Never creates a duplicate if the import is rerun, and resumes where it left off.

Day to day

  1. Enter the store's address; add an application token only if you also want customers and orders.
  2. Check access before launching anything, to avoid a migration of several thousand products failing on the first page.
  3. Run a trial first, which changes nothing, and read the report to see what would be brought in and what would be rejected.
  4. Switch off trial mode and run the real import; for a catalogue of more than twenty-five thousand products, switch to an application token.
  5. If the public storefront refuses access, consider a firewall closing the store to robots rather than a failure, and switch to an application token.

What the application does not do

  • This is not a continuous sync, and it does not replace your sales system: it is a tooled catalogue import, run when you decide to.
  • Without an application token, it does not bring in customers or orders, which no store exposes without authentication.
  • It writes nothing back to Shopify and never modifies the source store.
  • Anything beyond bringing in the catalogue, customers and orders stays a case-by-case study, depending on what your source store actually exposes.
  • The application-token path, for customers and orders, has not been tested by the publisher against a real store, unlike the token-free path: start with a trial before relying on it for a real import.

Getting started

Start without a token for a first trial on your store's public storefront, then create an application token with the necessary read rights as soon as you also want customers, orders, or a catalogue larger than the public limit. Then check that your catalogue carries a price on every variant, since a product's price always comes from its first variant rather than from the product itself.
