PrestaShop import: bringing your catalogue across

Bringing a PrestaShop store across always raises the same practical question: how to pull in products, their combinations and orders without retyping everything. This application reads the store's catalogue and brings it into yours, with a report of what was rejected.

Who the application is for

For merchants who run or have run a PrestaShop store and want to bring their catalogue, customers and orders into their own catalogue.

What the application does

  • Reads categories, products, their combinations, customers and orders through PrestaShop's long-standing web service interface.
  • Recognises multilingual fields in either their plain-string or translation-list form, depending on the store's number of languages.
  • Explicitly names a combination's price difference, so it is never mistaken for a full selling price.
  • Follows the platform's offset-and-limit pagination, without relying on a count header it does not provide.
  • Never creates a duplicate if the import is rerun, and resumes where it left off.
  • Explicitly requests responses in the format your catalogue expects, while the store's interface answers in a different format by default.

Day to day

  1. Enter the store's address and the web service key generated on the PrestaShop side, with the necessary read rights; this key acts as the login, with no associated password.
  2. Check access before launching anything, to avoid a migration of several thousand products failing on the first page.
  3. Run a trial first, which changes nothing, and read the report to see what would be brought in and what would be rejected.
  4. Switch off trial mode and run the real import; rerun it without worry if needed, since no duplicate will be created.
  5. If the store answers with an error on large pages, reduce the number of records requested per call: this is a limit of the store, not of the application.

What the application does not do

  • This is not a continuous sync, and it does not replace your sales system: it is a tooled catalogue import, run when you decide to.
  • It does not bring in images, which are a separate stream on PrestaShop.
  • It writes nothing back to PrestaShop.
  • Anything beyond bringing in the catalogue, customers and orders stays a case-by-case study.

Getting started

Enable the web service on the store side and generate a key with read rights on products, combinations, categories, customers and orders, then enter the store's root address in the application before checking access. Keep in mind that a combination's price difference is added to the item's price, rather than replacing it.
