A cutblock per State or province, a different scaling rule on either side of a border, a stumpage rate recalculated every quarter: tracking all this on a spreadsheet loses sight of the volume actually harvested, and of what remains owed. This application keeps that register for timber harvest operators in the United States and Canada, without ever guessing a rate or a coefficient on your behalf.
Who the application is for
For timber harvest operators, sawmills and foresters who cut timber in the United States or Canada and need to track their cutblocks, authorizations and volumes under their own State or provincial law. The harvest regime is never federal in North America: it changes from one State or province to another, and the application is built around that principle.
What the application does
- Keeps the register of cutblocks, of authorizations issued by State or province and of measured volumes, each tied to its own jurisdiction.
- Lets you enter a volume scale in one of four equation forms, with your own coefficients, their edition year and their source.
- Keeps a dated table of stumpage rates, by species, product, region and period, and calculates the amount due once the rates are entered.
- Carries out the standing timber cruise by sample plots, extrapolates it to the cutblock's area, and compares it with the volume actually harvested.
- Tracks each load from the cutblock to the mill, with the timber mark, the volume at departure and the volume recorded on arrival, and shows the variance.
- Offers a lookup of a timber mark registry, where manual entry remains the default path.
Day to day
- Record the cutting authorization once issued, with its official number and the parcels it covers.
- Before cutting, carry out the standing timber cruise by sample plots and let the application extrapolate it to the cutblock's area.
- Record each measured volume harvested, with its species and its timber mark.
- Calculate the stumpage once the period's rates are entered, then reconcile the calculation against the notice received from the authority.
- Track the load through to the mill and record the volume recorded on arrival to display the variance against the volume at departure.
What the application does not do
- It does not provide any stumpage rate or any scaling coefficient: these are values specific to each State or province, to be entered and dated by you from the manual that applies where you operate.
- It does not calculate a stumpage amount for a measurement that no dated rate covers, rather than counting it wrongly as zero.
- It does not look up any timber mark registry live: the automatic source is delivered inactive, and manual entry is the normal path.
- It does not set any threshold for the variance between the standing timber cruise and the volume harvested, nor between the volume shipped and the volume received: these thresholds are specific to each jurisdiction.
- It does not replace the advice of the forestry authority of your State or province: the rules differ from one place to another, and they do change.
Free and full editions
The free edition already keeps the register of cutblocks, of State or provincial authorizations and of measured volumes, with a detailed regime for five sourced jurisdictions — California, Oregon, Washington State, British Columbia and Ontario — the others being left for you to fill in. The full edition installs on top without losing anything, and adds the volume scales, the stumpage rates, the standing timber cruise and the log tracking through to the mill.
Getting started
First fill in the regime of your State or province, then enter your own scaling coefficients and your stumpage rates from the official manual that applies where you operate, with their edition year and their exact source.
