eBay import: bringing your inventory across

Leaving eBay to sell elsewhere always starts with the same question: how to bring your inventory across without retyping everything by hand. This application reads the items and orders of an eBay store and brings them into your catalogue, with a report of what was rejected.

Who the application is for

For eBay sellers who want to bring their inventory and orders into their catalogue, to keep selling elsewhere without starting from a blank product record.

What the application does

  • Reads the seller's inventory items, with price and category taken from their listing.
  • Brings in orders with each one's buyer, even though eBay nowhere lists a seller's customer base as such.
  • Chooses the production or sandbox environment by a simple address, to rule out the risk of mixing the two up.
  • Follows the next-page link returned by eBay rather than calculating an offset itself, to stay accurate across the platform's two pagination systems.
  • Never creates a duplicate if the import is rerun, and resumes where it left off.

Day to day

  1. Enter the user access token, obtained with the seller's consent, and choose the production or sandbox address.
  2. Check access before launching anything, to avoid a migration of several thousand items failing on the first page.
  3. Run a trial first, which changes nothing, and read the report to see what would be brought in and what would be rejected.
  4. Switch off trial mode and run the real import, which stops cleanly on an expired token or a quota limit.
  5. If refused for a reached quota, let the import stop: it resumes at the same point the next day, without needing to relaunch anything by hand.

What the application does not do

  • This is not a continuous sync, and it does not replace your sales system: it is a tooled catalogue import, run when you decide to.
  • It does not import any customer list as such: eBay does not list a seller's buyers outside of the orders themselves.
  • It writes nothing back to eBay and does not bring in listings created before the current inventory model without a prior migration on eBay's own side.
  • Anything beyond bringing in the catalogue and orders stays a case-by-case study.

Getting started

Prepare a user access token with read scopes on inventory and orders, start with the sandbox or a trial on your real store, and keep in mind that a renamed item identifier will reappear as a new item. An eBay access token only lasts two hours: for a long migration, renew it and rerun the import, which will resume exactly where it left off.
